Job Description

Mewbourne Oil Company, an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, is seeking to hire an experienced and professional Surface Landman in Hobbs, New Mexico.

I. SUMMARY
A brief description that summarizes the overall purpose and objectives of the position and the results the worker is expected to accomplish.

The Surface Landman will be responsible for specific duties surrounding all surface land functions and will be required to have a strong working knowledge of the land business as well as the current rules and regulations for drilling in the State of New Mexico. The Surface Landman will need to understand permitting, title and leasing and be able to schedule construction on sites, negotiate surface damages and be able to react to complex surface problems or issues that arise in connection with the exploration and development activity.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The tasks, duties and responsibilities of the position that are most important to get the job done.

  1. Serve as company liaison with other companies, landowners, local, county, state and federal regulatory agencies;
  2. Coordinate and collaborate closely with in-house landmen and other departments in support of company’s operations for all surface-related land activities;
  3. Interpret and enforce lease rights and obligations and ensure compliance therewith;
  4. Negotiate, analyze, and draft land related contracts pertaining to surface use, i.e., surface damage agreements, rights-of-way, road use, frac pits, etc.;
  5. Determine and coordinate appropriate site-specific mitigation measures to ensure regulatory compliance;
  6. Work with local, state and federal regulatory agencies to provide necessary information in order to comply with the regulatory requirements to permit.

III. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The specific minimum competencies required for job performance.

  1. Advanced negotiation skills;
  2. Detail oriented and strong organizational skills;
  3. Strong interpersonal skills;
  4. Proven analytical skills;
  5. Strong knowledge of real property and contract law;
  6. Strong understanding and experience with applicable county, state and federal regulatory rules and procedures in New Mexico;
  7. Ability to efficiently use Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel;
  8. An understanding of Enertia Land System database is preferred.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS
The environment in which the job is performed, especially any unique conditions outside a normal office environment.

  1. Consistent with that of a normal office environment/field setting;
  2. Travel required to field sites, governmental offices and county courthouses as needed.

V. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum level of education, experience and certifications required to perform the job.

  1. Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in progressive land related work;
  2. PLM, Energy Management or related Bachelor’s degree preferred.
